Cozy and Content

Aren't the days after Christmas some of the best? I'm relishing some quiet time to reflect and get a jump start on next year planning. A gift of 100 Easy To Grow Native Plants has me cross referencing lists of plants for the moist area up by the road. My criteria of native, moist and butterfly attractive has resulted in just three suggestions: Fireweed, Salal and Western Bleeding Heart.

      

By omitting butterfly I get a very useful list of about 20 species. Many of them have berries the birds will enjoy. Another pass through will remove any poisonous to pets and small children. This spot isn't close to the orchard or kitchen garden so doesn't have to work too hard for me. I'll plant more specifically for pollinators in other areas. In return for using native plants I'm calculating on not too much maintenance.

This was our first Christmas at the farm.  In-laws joined us and I learnt four adults and a small dog can have just as much fun at Christmas as a house full of children. I must give credit to P. who arrived with Christmas in her heart, ready to enjoy Christmas in the country. Our days were pleasantly divided into walks in crisp air under green trees, relaxing in front of a warm and cheerful fire, playing games and eating chocolate.

 Cooper says 'Put the leash down. How often do I have to tell you, leave me by the fire."
