In Stitches

I have stitches in my leg, just below my calf muscle.
"No stress on the wound until I see you next week," announced the doctor.
What***!?
"Doc", I say, "This is my diggin' leg and it's plantin' time."
The city boy looks baffled.
"Tell you what," I offer, "I'll slap some duct tape over it before I go out to the back 40."
An awkward silence then he slowly pushes an instruction chit towards me.
I'm thinking there might be a mental health referral on his desk next week. One of us is going to need it before this is over.

It will not be me because I haven't cracked

while living like this

the orange is gone-hooray

or trying to raise my plant babies like this

Although there is the straw that broke the camel's back theory, which may come into play next week, because I want to take out my own stitches...

  1. I totally sympathize, I'm also in a predicament with a bad knee that hurts so I can hardly walk in the middle of the night after too much heavy gardening lifting and chores. Just a little shoveling set it off again, and it's planting time! I'm taking as many anti-inflammatory herbs and vitamins as I can in the hopes I will see some improvement soon. I hope you recover quickly, but staying off for a while may help, I'm telling myself.

    1. Oh Hannah, I feel for you. Before this happened my knees were on fire every night. You are right, the rest has helped my knees, so always a silver lining. What herbs do you use?

  2. apologies for not visiting you in a while, but goodness what have you been up to in my absence? I am so sorry to hear about your leg and good wishes for a speedy recovery (and please do not take your own stiches out - I am wincing at the thought!).

    1. Fear not, I used to be a nurse. In my opinion doctors are good at putting stitches in but not so great at taking them out.

  3. Oh dear - that sounds nasty - did you have an accident? I hope your little seedy things survive in all that chaos - the first room looks an amazing space - should look fantastic when its finished. Hope your digging leg gets better soon.

    1. Thank you so much for recognising the chaos-my husband thrives on it so he doesn't understand my frustration. The plants seem to like it too.

    1. I tried out the digging leg today but it did not go as well as I hoped. Fortunately I have the 'hired hand" and he is awaiting his digging orders.

    1. The wood ceiling is lovely but it makes the room dark, white has made all the difference.

  8. I have always taken out my own stitches....well after the first set was taken out by a doctor. I guess I just cannot justify a trip to the Dr for a simple snip and tug. We all need to be able to do some of these simple things, medically speaking. As to your gardening...I am in awe!

    1. Yes, we need to up our game on simple medical procedures we can do for ourselves. I live on the coast and used to work in the emergency room. I'm always in awe at how good the fishing boat captains are at first aid-we get patients in with quite severe injuries but very well managed.

  9. Oh dear! Hope your wounds heal very soon and you can get digging. My accident prone husband threw a metal pronged dibber at the ground last Saturday but the tag got caught on his fingers so he speared his leg instead ! Horrible puncture wound . Ten minutes later he hit himself on the head with a rake ! I was merciless in my teasing, then tripped tonight on a tree stump and gashed my leg. People in glass houses ...

    1. Oh no, your poor husband, poor you. Those first few days of good weather are dangerous before we get our outdoors skills ramped up.

  10. I had stitches put in by a doctor in the States once. I asked if I could get a Canadian doctor to take them out. Sure, was the reply. I'm a doctor, so I really wasn't lying. I just didn't tell him I was a doctor of education. Oops. - Margy

  11. Oh no! I hope you feel better soon. But I agree that duct tape is so much easier and much more decorative. :o)
