Meadow Dreams And A Mother's Heart

Every mother will know the heart searching involved in moving away from her children. Every decision we make, from the birth of our first baby, includes reflecting on how it will affect our children. My offspring possess generous hearts. Their Mother's Day cards contained personal, heartfelt notes of encouragement.  Once found, thoughtful, loving, words congratulated me on finding the house they forsee as a haven.
For my children, and all who find their way to my door, I offer this verse:
May this house shelter your life.
When you come home here,
May all the weight of the world
Fall from your shoulders.
from For A New Home, by John O’Donohue
I haven't seen the property since our offer was accepted. We hopped on a 'plane back to Calgary early the next morning.
This is the meadow with red chicken coop to match the barn. Below is how I might tweak it. I admit the pace of work has slowed as I indulge in daydreams.

If I could hire a garden designer, and fly him over from the English Cotswolds, I would chose Andrew Jordan simply on the basis of this wildflower meadow.

  1. I have a child who moved across the country 15 years ago. It broke my heart. However, I realized after a little while that all I ever wanted for those I loved was that they have their dreams come true and that they be happy. I am sure this is what your children want for you also.

  2. WOW! I would agree..simply amazing! The verse is beautiful and so very appropriate for your new home....sometimes I think that we should have thought of finding a place with more land for future generations. All the best!

    1. It may still be in your future. One never knows what is around the corner.

  3. Dear Susan,
The fact that your new property has a chicken coop makes me happy! I know you are only at the beginning of your plans but do you plan to keep hens?
I have always liked the idea of a wild flower meadow ever since I saw one that my cousin created. The mown 'path' running through it is a lovely idea. One day . . . when we have our own land, I intend to have one too!

    1. Chickens, maybe. Goose definitely. They are as good as a watchdog especially where bears are concerned.

  5. Yippee you did it! And all that garden space... I bet you plan gardens all night now instead of sleeping.

  6. Susan,

Your new property has so many possibilities! A meadow with wildflowers is a lovely idea. Just let the flowers run free.

  7. Hi! Reference your comment on my blog about bears. Check with BC Natural resources as to which bears you may encounter. The way you deal with a Kodiak is slightly different to how you deal with a black bear encounter. There may be a 'Bear wise' group in your new area, they give talks in village halls etc on how to live with bears.
Education is the key...remember, you may have cougars too so you need to know what to do, just in case.
