A few things from this week:
Picked blackcurrants from the bush L. gave us. It brought back memories of picking them as a high schooler for summer spending money. Bending over all day had no effect on me then, a different story now.
Bought two climbing roses from the garden centre 20% sale, Joseph's Coat and Royal Gold. They are destined for the north fence of the kitchen garden. After I got them home I thought I should have bought another gold. I'd like to follow Gertrude Jeykll's theme of starting pale at the outside and working to a crescendo of colour in the middle.
Chased a small bear from the back door. His little paw was just coming over the sill when I got to him. He may be a two yr old just kicked out by his mom but he seems small. I hope he is not an orphan. Either way he has to learn to stay away from humans.
Off to visit you now.
Beautiful roses in the garden, yes! Small bears at the back door, no.
ReplyDeleteI can't grow blackcurrants in PA, Susan, but I'm having my share of blackcurrant jam while I'm in England. I don't think that cute fellow is two years old yet. The two-year-olds always seem to find their way into our garden, and they are much bigger. Your new roses are lovely, and I look forward to a posting about Gertrude Jeykll's garden. I return to US tomorrow. P. x
ReplyDeleteSusan, I planted two Joseph Coats just before leaving town in May. I am hoping to have them climb up and over my den window. We will see. Oh that blessed bear. I hope he makes it safely back into the wild. Have a great week. B.
ReplyDeleteThose roses are just beautiful! I wish I had more luck with them - good grief! That is a close encounter with a bear - even a small one. It never ends well, when they start to get too close to humans. Even if they mean no harm. I had to laugh, as I remember having no trouble at all picking strawberries all afternoon. Now I have to take a break every half hour!
ReplyDeleteYAY for blackcurrants! And those blooms are gorgeous friend! My goodness! And holy cow! Look at that BEAR!!!! AHHHH!!! That is an amazing photo! I hope he finds his way back to his home and away from your house!!! Got a kick out of your little visitor! Happy week friend! Nicole xo
ReplyDeleteI've grown Joseph's Coat before. It's such a beauty! I hope that bear learns to fear humans or he won't live for long. But is a cutie, isn't he?
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had a row of black currants as a fence in her back yard. I loved to eat them off the bush while I sat under the shade of the mulberry tree on a hot summer day. - Margy
ReplyDeleteI adore that Joseph's Coat rose and what a cutie pie of a bear but of course he has to go!
ReplyDeleteOh I picked black currants today too. I only have about a cupful from just one bush. I wonder what you do with them. i'm thinking of flinging them into a banana bread recipe to kind of jazz it up... How shocking to have a bear come calling! Did you give him a chance to say what he was selling?
