Flying Spinach and Other Tales

According to Santos, the accident happened near a kiosk where she slipped on "old wet spinach or some other transitory substance" on the floor and was injured as a result of the fall. publix-supermarkets-v-santos
My winter garden has been a dismal failure. I resent having to buy week old, much travelled, gas guzzling produce at the grocery store. In this frame of mind, with my thoughts directed this time at spinach, I entered the produce aisle. Somebody had rammed far to many cartons into the chute. I pulled out the first one and thud, thud, thud  three or four more flew out and hit me hard on the chest. I may have let out the tiniest squeak of surprise.

Moving on. I'm now part of a delightful garden club at the extended care unit. Us able bodied folks do the heavy lifting and our buddies do what they can. We planted over a hundred bulbs under their supervision a few weeks ago.  With colder weather upon us we have moved indoors. Last week we filled pinecones with peanut butter and rolled them in birdseed. It was our job to take the cones outside and hang them in the tree in front of the sitting area window. We must recruit some taller people. After a bit of a struggle a member of our group had the brilliant idea to create nunchuks-twine with a cone at each end-and throw them as high as we could at the tree. The ECU is looking forward to our return, we make wonderful pre-lunch entertainment.

Ho Ho Ho. The hubs and I were volunteering at the Christmas Train last night. In this case he was doing all the heavy lifting and I was running around playing with children and chatting with friends. We had a large turnout, everyone had fun and we collected donations for the food bank too.

Next week Mon, Wed and Thurs I'm back at the library working the donation desk. I'm making gingerbread men to lure people into my lair.

On Tuesday I'm part of the audience at the dress rehearsel for the elementary school concert. The teacher says it helps them prepare for the real thing-I think we are there to make them behave.

I think that leaves me about a week to prepare for Christmas. Should be enough....

  1. Any type of gingerbread would get me there!!! Definitely my favourite holiday treat. The pinecone idea is a good one.

  2. What a busy time, supermarket spinach very unattractive sounding - I didn't realize it could be dangerous!

  3. My garden is pretty sparse, but I still have carrots, beets, kale and chard to pick. My lettuce just melted in the frost a few weeks back. I tried growing some lettuce in a makeshift greenhouse, but the woodrat has found a way in around my plastic mesh corral and plastic tarp. He's even chewing up my beautiful five year old cedar tree that's I've been nursing. Got to get that rascal and relocate him to Goat Island. - Maryg

  4. I love that you are using gingerbread men to lure people and what a magnificent garden club...with our winters I have no choice but to buy produce...sadly.

    1. Since my winter garden was so poor I'm planning to freeze and can a lot more next year. Not really my forte but I feel if our ancestors could do it I should buck up and give it a try.

  5. Now that I've tried making suet balls for birds visiting my garden I have a question. I couldn't find lard at Quality Foods so I bought frozen suet as a substitute. It worked fine to make the suet seed balls, but I noticed they attracted a lot of small black gnats. In fact, they were covered in them with more flying in clouds nearby waiting their turn. Does that happen with your hanging pine cones? I cut mine down to discourage the flying pests from gathering near the cabin. - Margy
