Raincoat Weather

The day our daughter returned to her family my husband thought he should divert me. He took me to the grand re-opening of the hospital auxiliary economy shop. Does he know how to show a girl a good time or what.

His plan worked like a charm. Within 5 minutes I had found a 8ft long table, perfect for the greenhouse. Its $10 price tag didn't hurt either.

The legs had to be unscrewed prior to getting it into the trunk. Normally I would have been on the other end of that sucker but the nice shop manager wouldn't hear of it. Little does he know, when it comes to hauling home finds, my husband and I are a well oiled team.

A few days of sawing and hammering in the barn and it sports a new lower shelf and some sturdy bracing.

The big job this week was topping up all the beds with four inches of topsoil, plus household compost and mushroom manure. Then we covered them all with heavy duty plastic to dry out and warm up, plus I didn't want all that goodness to be washed away. Only just in time as the next day the rain came down in sheets.

No wonder they say Pacific Northwest people have webbed feet.

  1. That table was a SCORE! I will definitely hit that Auxiliary gift shop when I'm up your way.
Good work on the beds. All that goodness, just waiting for seeds and sunshine!

    1. We have two charity shops, the hospital auxiliary has the best bargains.

  2. I got to go to the Economy Shop's new store last week. I came out with a nice big pot to boil water on the woodstove for $1.00. There's so much space it was hard to find things. I got two of my float garden beds worked up with manure so they can rest until planting time. The other two I want to leave growing since there's nice kale, chard, carrots and beets to pick. I tried to find mushroom manure but had to settle for steer. - Margy

    1. I had got comfortable in the cramped quarters too. I pulled up the last of our winter root veg last week. Our kale is pathetic.

  3. How thoroughly delightful... there is nothing more satisfying than to stand by whilst two grown men lug an 8 ft table around is there?! It looks lovely when finished too, hope it took your mind off your daughter leaving?

    1. I felt a bit princessy watching them sweat over the table. Yes, the plan worked and I was cheerful for the rest of the day.

  4. Oh, nice find on that table! What a help that will be in your greenhouse! Where do you get your mushroom manure?

    1. Things are coming together although since the great pour began I have discovered the greenhouse leaks. I broke down and bought the manure in bags from the garden store. Usually I like to get this kind of thing from the source with my handy little trailer. I was having trouble finding organic straight from a farm but this bagged stuff claims it is.

  5. Wow, you are so ahead of us in the east. I am seeing a yellow cast on the Willow and some bushes, but I doubt that we will see a real sign of spring for at least a few more weeks. However, Mother Nature could surprise. Until then, I am not ready to go out and clean or prepare my gardens.

    1. I think the weather gods saw what I was up to as it has been pouring rain for days. The rule of thumb here is to begin when the forsythia blooms which it is just beginning to do.

  6. What a great find and I love what you did with the table. I love Spring but it sure can be a lot of work with the gardens. Enjoy!

    1. Spring is for sure my busiest time of year on our little farm. I even put an out of office message on my email and tell people only to call in an emergency.
